War Bonds poster from WWII

Financing World War II

To finance WWII, the Treasury Department sold war bonds and stamps encouraging the public to support this effort as part of their patriotic duty. This system of voluntary loans from the public was adopted in lieu of taxation. Popular art was used in promotional posters (much of it donated) and bond rallies were held by celebrities to encourage people to buy bonds.

Created by N. C. Wyeth for the U.S. Government Printing Office. Wyeth contributed patriotic images to the government during both World Wars.
